1. Strychnos nux-vomica
Strychnos nux vomica tree produces a poison named Strychnine which is an alkaloid poison which is enough why this plant comes in this category. It is used to kill rodents since 16th century (Rodenticide). Accidental poisonings, homicide and suicide cases due to strychnine were also widely reported during the 19th century and it was responsible for the death of many children in that century.
Now a days strychnine is used in drugs and acts as a poison. Somewhere it is good as it is used in homeopathic medications and herbal remedies in a very small amounts. Strychnine when consumed by human stops the proper working of the body causing prevention in the functioning of the chemical messenger system of the body and causes pain in the muscle and in lethal doses can cause death. Symptoms of strychnine poison are :- tight jaws, breathing difficulties or darkened urine etc.
2. Aconitum species
It produces some of the potent toxins which are cardio-toxic and neurotoxic. Consumption or accidental ingestion of the roots or tubers of this plant could lead to poisoning. The toxins stops the voltage sensitive channels which results in the sudden stop which leads to hyperstimulation of the tissues. This poison results in lowering of blood pressure and bpm(BEATS PER MINUTE), chest pain, nausea and vomitting, abdominal pain etc.
3. Sinopodophyllum hexandrum
Also called Himalayan mayapple. It contains resin from which the neurotoxin, podophyllin, can be extracted. It can be extremely hazardous to health if consumed to leathl dose. Although this toxin has therapeutic properties in treating genital warts, in higher doses it can be life threatning. Even if this poison is applied topically (ON THE SKIN OR BODY) in lethal or near lethal doses, it can be absorbed into the body, causing fatal reactions like sudden itching and then it directly goes into the blood vessels and then death.
4. Ricinus communis
Ricinus communis, the castor bean or castor oil plant, is a species of perennial flowering plant in the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is the sole species in the monotypic genus, Ricinus, and subtribe, Ricininae. The seeds of this of this plant contains ricin and RCA (Ricinus communis agglutinin) , one of the most potent toxins of the world. This is enough to clot your blood that INSIDE your body.
5. Cerbera odollam
Cerbera odollam is responsible for killing many people in India both by suicidal and homicidal poisoning. The main name Cerbera odollam comes from cerberus the mythical hound with three heads that guards the gates of the underworld. This deadly plant grows all across India and is quite infamous for its deadly qualities. In Kerala, half of the deaths due to poisoning are contributed to this suicide tree or cerbera.
The kernels of the plant are the most dangerous or poisonous parts and have bitter taste. The kernels are the one which have the toxins Cerberin. It is a cardiotoxin it blocks your heart causing the heartbeat to stop.
